2026 Guide: HD Today UK: HD Channels, Quality & Setup Guide
Updated June 2026 with current pricing, channel listings and UK setup steps. High definition television is the standard across UK broadcasting in 2026. Every major broadcaster offers HD versions of their channels, streaming apps default to HD quality, and modern TVs are designed for HD and 4K content. This guide covers which HD channels are available on Freeview, how to ensure you are getting HD quality through streaming apps, and when upgrading to 4K is worthwhile.
HD Channels on Freeview
Freeview carries 15+ HD channels in the 100+ channel range. The main HD channels include BBC One HD (101), BBC Two HD (102), ITV1 HD (103), Channel 4 HD (104), Channel 5 HD (105), BBC Four HD (106), and CBeebies HD (107). Additional HD channels are available depending on your area's transmitter capacity.

HD Streaming Quality
All major UK streaming apps — BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, My5 — stream in HD (1080p) by default when your internet speed supports it. You need at least 5 Mbps for stable HD streaming. Most apps automatically adjust quality based on your connection speed, but you can manually set quality in each app's settings if you want to ensure HD.
Paid services like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video also stream in HD as standard. Netflix requires the Standard plan (£10.99) or higher for Full HD — the ad-supported plan at £4.99 also includes HD. HD vs 4K: Do You Need to Upgrade?
For most viewers, HD (1080p) provides excellent picture quality. The jump from standard definition to HD is dramatic and noticeable on any screen size. The jump from HD to 4K is more subtle — most noticeable on screens 50 inches and larger, and primarily visible in close viewing distances.
If you have a 4K TV (most TVs sold since 2020 are 4K), you are already benefiting from upscaling — the TV converts HD content to fill the 4K screen. Troubleshooting HD Quality Issues
Picture looks blurry or pixelated
Check you are watching the HD channel variant (101-107) not the SD version (1-5). For streaming, check your app's quality settings and ensure internet speed is above 5 Mbps.
HD channels missing on Freeview
Run an automatic retune (Menu → Settings → Channels → Retune). HD channels may not be available if your area's transmitter doesn't support them. See our retuning guide.
Streaming quality keeps dropping

Colours look washed out on HD
Check your TV's picture settings. Many TVs have a 'Movie' or 'Cinema' picture mode that provides more accurate colours than the default 'Standard' or 'Vivid' modes.
