Freeview: Best for Most Households
Freeview is the default choice for the majority of UK homes. Most properties already have a TV aerial, and most TVs have a built-in Freeview tuner — meaning the only cost is potentially a Freeview box if you want recording or Freeview Play features. With 70+ channels and Freeview Play adding catch-up from all broadcasters, it covers the essentials comprehensively.
Freeview's main limitation is geographic coverage. Some areas (particularly valleys, behind tall buildings, and remote rural locations) have weak aerial reception. Freesat: Best for More Channels & Poor Aerial Areas
Freesat delivers over 200 channels via satellite — significantly more than Freeview's 70+. The additional channels include niche interest stations, international content, and HD versions of channels that Freeview only carries in standard definition. Satellite reception is excellent across virtually all of the UK, making Freesat the go-to option for areas with poor aerial coverage.

YouView: Best for Integrated Catch-Up
YouView boxes combine Freeview aerial reception with deeply integrated internet catch-up. The interface blends live TV and on-demand into a single programme guide where you can scroll backwards through time to find catch-up content — a feature called “roll back.” Most YouView boxes include built-in recording (PVR) with twin tuners.
YouView requires both an aerial and a broadband connection — it is designed as a hybrid platform. BT TV and TalkTalk TV use YouView boxes as their set-top box hardware, so if you are with either provider you may already have one. For standalone YouView boxes, expect to pay £60 to £250 depending on storage capacity.
